On July 28, 2016, the Town of Gander renamed the Gander Community Centre after long time resident and business owner Harry Steele.

On July 28, 2016, the Town of Gander renamed the Gander Community Centre after long time resident and business owner Harry Steele.

Mr. Steele first purchased the Albatross Hotel in Gander in 1969. Since that time under the leadership of Mr. Steele’s son John, Steele Hotels has grown to include six properties stretching right across the island.

Mr. Steele also founded Newfoundland Capital Corporation, which now has almost 100 radio stations across Canada, including Steele Communications in this province. He is also the former owner of Eastern Provincial Airlines.

Present for the unveiling where Mr. Steele’s wife Catherine, two of Mr. Steele’s three sons Rob and John, daughter-in-law Darlene, and grandson Eric. Unable to attend the event was son Peter.
